What is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is a condition characterized by sweating that exceeds the body’s temperature-regulation needs. It commonly affects the underarms, palms, soles, and face. Primary (idiopathic) hyperhidrosis often begins in adolescence and is not caused by another medical issue, while secondary hyperhidrosis can be related to medications or underlying conditions. We carefully review your history and pattern of sweating to guide the right excessive sweating treatment.

Why Excessive Sweating Happens

In primary hyperhidrosis, overactive cholinergic nerve signals trigger sweat glands to produce more sweat than necessary. Triggers may include heat, stress, exercise, or specific activities like typing or public speaking. Hyperhidrosis is a cosmetic treatment at Dennis Gross Dermatology. We evaluate your symptoms and, treat each patient appropriately.

BOTOX® for Hyperhidrosis Treatment

How Botulinum Toxin for Hyperhidrosis Works

We treat hyperhidrosis with BOTOX® (onabotulinumtoxinA). Botulinum toxin temporarily blocks the nerve signals that tell sweat glands to activate. For underarm hyperhidrosis, BOTOX® is FDA approved for adults who have not had satisfactory results with topical antiperspirants. We may also treat palms, soles, and other areas as medically appropriate (off-label) after an in-person evaluation.

Your Treatment Experience

Most sessions take about 20–30 minutes but can take longer depending on areas treated. We review the treatment area, cleanse the skin, and use a fine needle to place tiny amounts of BOTOX® just under the skin. To support comfort, we can use topical numbing. You can return to normal activities right away, avoiding vigorous exercise and hot environments for the first 24 hours.

Results, Longevity, and Maintenance

Many patients begin noticing reduced sweating within 2–7 days, with optimal dryness around 2 weeks. Underarm results typically last 4–6 months, and sometimes longer; palms and soles may require touch-ups closer to every 3–5 months. Maintenance timing varies by individual physiology and lifestyle, and we tailor a plan to your goals.

Candidacy, Safety, and Recovery

Who is a Candidate?

You may be a good candidate if excessive sweating interferes with daily life, you’ve tried medical-strength antiperspirants without adequate relief, and you are not pregnant or nursing. We will review your medical history, medications, and prior treatments to ensure BOTOX® is an appropriate excessive sweating treatment for you.

Safety and Side Effects

BOTOX® for hyperhidrosis is well studied. Common temporary effects can include mild tenderness, swelling, or bruising at injection sites. Palmar treatment can occasionally cause temporary hand weakness. Serious side effects are uncommon but possible; we discuss risks and provide aftercare instructions so you know exactly how to care for the area.

How Fast Will I See Less Sweating?

Most patients notice improvement within the first week, with peak dryness around 14 days. If needed, we schedule a follow-up to assess your response and plan maintenance.

Is BOTOX® for Hyperhidrosis Covered by Insurance?

At Dennis Gross Dermatology, hyperhidrosis is a cosmetic treatment and we do not submit to insurance.

Underarms, Palms, Or Soles—Can You Treat All Areas?

Underarm hyperhidrosis treatment with BOTOX® is FDA approved for adults who fail topical therapy. Treating the palms, soles, forehead, and other areas can be considered off-label based on your exam and goals.

How Does This Compare with Other Options?

We commonly see patients who have tried prescription antiperspirants or glycopyrronium wipes, oral anticholinergics, iontophoresis, or energy-based devices. While results vary, BOTOX® offers targeted, non-surgical control with predictable, time-limited effects and no downtime for most patients.
