Medical Conditions and When to See a Dermatologist
Eczema (atopic dermatitis), contact dermatitis, psoriasis, keratosis pilaris, hypothyroidism, diabetes, and nutritional deficiencies can all present as dry, itchy, or scaly skin. Seek an appointment if dryness persists despite moisturizers, you notice red, painful cracks, widespread itch that disrupts sleep, or signs of skin infection (yellow crusting, swelling, warmth). We will perform a focused skin exam and, when indicated, patch testing or lab review to identify underlying causes.
How We Diagnose and Treat
In-Office Treatments for Dry Skin
Your treatment plan focuses on repairing the skin barrier and reducing inflammation. Depending on your needs, we may recommend: barrier-repair emollients rich in ceramides, squalane, glycerin, and hyaluronic acid; urea or lactic acid creams to smooth rough patches; short courses of prescription topical corticosteroids or non-steroidal calcineurin inhibitors for eczema flares; targeted phototherapy for select inflammatory conditions; and gentle, hydrating in-office facials formulated to replenish lipids. If a medication or product is driving your dryness, we will help you adjust without compromising results for other skin concerns.
Home Care Routine That Works
What to Expect at Your Visit
We start with a thorough history (skin symptoms, routines, environment, allergies, medications), examine the skin, and discuss your goals. We will simplify your routine, remove irritants, and select products and prescriptions that match your skin type and lifestyle.
Most patients notice softer, more comfortable skin within 1–2 weeks when using the right moisturizer and habits, with continued improvements over 4–6 weeks as the barrier normalizes. Chronic conditions like eczema may require periodic maintenance; we build a prevention plan for seasonal shifts and travel.

Not always. Dry skin is a symptom; eczema is an inflammatory disease that often causes dry, itchy patches and may need prescription therapy. We can differentiate and treat both.
Look for fragrance-free creams with ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids. For very dry areas, petrolatum or dimethicone-based ointments help seal in moisture.
Gentle chemical exfoliants (like low-strength lactic acid) can smooth rough texture, but over-exfoliation worsens dryness. We’ll guide frequency and type for your skin.
If dryness lasts more than two weeks despite careful moisturizing, cracks bleed, itch disturbs sleep, or you see a rash spreading, schedule a visit for evaluation.
