Why Routine Skin Checks Matter in New York
Full Body Skin Exam on Fifth Avenue, NYC
A full body skin exam at New York’s Dr. Dennis Gross Dermatology is a head‑to‑toe evaluation of your skin, scalp, nails, and mucosal areas to identify suspicious moles, growths, rashes, and sun damage. Your dermatologist reviews your history, discusses risk factors, and performs dermoscopy (a magnified, polarized light exam) to assess lesions more precisely. When appropriate, we document notable spots for comparison over time. Most visits take 15–30 minutes. This thorough full body skin check is a cornerstone of skin cancer screening and helps us find concerns early—often before they are visible to the unaided eye.

Who Should Consider Skin Cancer Screening
Everyone benefits from annual screening, but it is especially important if you have a personal or family history of skin cancer, fair skin or freckles, numerous or atypical moles, a history of blistering sunburns or tanning bed use, immune suppression, or significant outdoor/occupational sun exposure. We tailor the follow‑up schedule to your risk—often annually, and sooner if we are monitoring specific lesions.
Signs to Watch Between Visits
Look for the ABCDEs of melanoma and other warning signs:
Also note new, non‑healing, bleeding, or tender spots. If something changes, schedule a prompt skin cancer screening.
Holistic Wellness
Ideal for those who want to combine skincare with overall well-being, promoting balance, radiance, and healthy glowing skin from the inside out deeply.

Our Process for Skin Cancer Screening and Diagnosis
Step‑By‑Step Visit
We start with a focused conversation about your concerns and sun history, then provide a respectful, systematic exam while you wear a gown. A chaperone is available upon request. We use dermoscopy to evaluate specific lesions and may photograph or map certain moles for comparison. At the end, we review findings, answer questions, and recommend next steps—whether that is routine follow‑up, at‑home monitoring guidance, or in‑office treatment.
Biopsy and Skin Cancer Diagnosis
If a lesion appears suspicious, we may recommend a small, in‑office skin biopsy to confirm the diagnosis. After local anesthetic, a tiny sample is taken and sent to a dermatopathology lab. Most patients resume normal activities the same day. When skin cancer is diagnosed, we outline personalized options and coordinate care—ranging from in‑office procedures to collaboration with surgical specialists in NYC when indicated.
Preparation, Aftercare, and Follow‑Up
How to Prepare
After Your Full Body Skin Check
We provide clear written instructions if a biopsy or treatment is performed and share pathology results as soon as they are available. We also create a personalized follow‑up plan. Between visits, practice sun protection (broad‑spectrum SPF 30+, protective clothing, shade) and perform monthly self‑checks to support early skin cancer detection.
